چکیده

Materials and Methods Data were collected from a prospectively maintained database and retrospective chart review. The data collected included maternal and neonatal characteristics, aetiology of respiratory failure, oxygenation index (OI) and alveolararterial oxygen gradient (AaDO2) prior to undergoing ECMO, age of commencing ECMO, duration of ECMO, complications, duration of hospitalisation and follow-up. Nitric oxide was commenced when the OI was ≥15 as per unit protocol.

Current status of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for severe respiratory failure.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for respiratory failure was reviewed. ECMO progressed from laboratory research to initial clinical trials in 1972. Following a decade of clinical research, ECMO is now standard treatment for neonatal respiratory failure refractory to conventional pulmonary support techniques worldwide. The application of neonatal ECMO has been extended with improved ou...

Resource use and health outcomes of paediatric extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

The use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation can be rationalised by the assumption that non-zero survival after refractory cardiorespiratory failure represents improved outcome. Survivors may have cognitive and or functional morbidities, require complex ongoing care, and as a consequence consume considerable healthcare resources.

Developmental outcome in newborn infants treated for acute respiratory failure with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation: present experience.

OBJECTIVE To describe the later health status of newborn infants who received extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for acute respiratory failure in the era after the UK ECMO trial. DESIGN Prospective follow up study of newborn infants who received ECMO at a single centre between January 1997 and January 2001. SETTING Departments of ECMO and Paediatric Intensive Care, University Hospit...

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for Severe Pediatric Respiratory Failure.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) was developed initially in the 1960s to support refractory respiratory failure in addition to the cardiac support inherent in a venoarterial bypass circuit. Early successes occurred predominantly in the neonatal population with subsequent randomized controlled trials and comprehensive reviews concluding therapeutic efficacy for ECMO in neonatal respira...

Neonatal and pediatric extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in developing Latin American countries.

OBJECTIVE To review the principles of neonatal-pediatric extracorporeal membrane oxygenation therapy, prognosis, and its establishment in limited resource-limited countries in Latino America. SOURCES The PubMed database was explored from 1985 up to the present, selecting from highly-indexed and leading Latin American journals, and Extracorporeal Life Support Organization reports. SUMMARY OF...
